Abstract
We investigated the association between hemifacial spasm (HFS) and arterial hypertension. The incidence of arterial hypertension in HFS patients (29.1%) is significantly higher than in controls (21.7%). The association of arterial hypertension and HFS among HFS patients was apparently greater in the age group > 60 (adjusted Odds Ratio (OR)=2.488, p=0.006) than in the age group < 60 (adjusted OR=1.332, p=0278). Among HFS patients, the mean age at the diagnosis of hypertension was significantly lower than mean age at the onset of HFS. Arterial hypertension occurred more frequently among the patients with HFS than other systemic diseases (diabetes mellitus, hypercholestemia, and hyperthyroidism). We found that hypertension was significantly associated with HFS, especially in elderly group.
Key Words: Hemifacial spasm, Arterial hypertension.
