Electrical stimulation procedures such as deep brain stimulation are being used in various movement disorders and psychiatric diseases nowadays. However, this technique has limitations because of its nonspecific tissue stimulation. During recent decade, it has been growing understandings regarding optogenetics which is a novel technique that could control individually specific neurons using optogene expression in freely moving animals. Especially, animal researches for Parkinson's disease with this method are being performed, and therapeutic effect was reported recently. This article presents how optogenetics could be applied to the treatment for disorders of central nervous system and its future works. |
