Gamma-Knife Radiosurgery of Foramen Magnum and Cervical Spinal Cord Tumor

Abstract
Objective
Foramen magnum, upper cervical and glomus jugulare area are surgical complex area. We have treated and assessed the effect of the Gamma-knife radiosurgery (GKS) for the tumors of these areas.
Methods
We have treated 15 patients with GKS during the last 14years. The 15 patients were comprised of five men and ten women, their ages ranging from 25 to 77years (mean age : 51years). The diagnoses were 4 glomus jugulare tumor, 2 cervicomedullary hemangioblastomas, 3 meningiomas, 3 astrocytomas, 1 hemangioma, 1 ependymoma, 1 hypoglossal tumor. Surgical intervention was performed in 4 before radiosurgery. Mean maximal dose was 21.6Gy. Mean marginal dose was 10.8Gy.
Results
Median follow up period was 41months (19-108months). Ten tumor had markedly decreased in size on follow-up MRI. The other cases were stationary. There was no complication.
Conclusions
The result of this study suggests that GKS is effective for upper cervical tumor, foramen magnum tumor, and glomus jugulare tumor patients without neurological deficit.
